Stagnant, Self-Absorbed and Service/Subscription Shaped Software July 23, 2010 S. Showalter (Ohio, USA) Summary: Don't bother! But if you must, get the full version not the download: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002KINCSW?tag=a52-20ie=UTF8

br /I and my wife are "do it yourself" types who run two small businesses with only 2 employees (ourselves). We just want a simple but functional accounting package where we can handle everything ourselves without the need to blow all the money that does come in on subscriptions to accounting services. We pay good money for QuickBooks already. Isn't that enough? On that note, I have to start off with the negative points, and try to wrap up with something positive along with a few notes about why you shouldn't bother with the downloadable version.

br /===== The Bad =====
br /
br /It will be Intuit's downfall for consistently and annoyingly upselling, cross-marketing, and advertising subscription services throughout their applications. The worst area for me is within Quickbooks Payroll.
br /
br /As a very small company with only 2 employees, it does not make any sense to subscribe to any QB Payroll services. That being said, it is possible to work around the ads but QB does make you work. #1, QB does not save your paycheck details (as in memorized paychecks). Each time we run payroll, I have to manually enter in all the data for withholding even though it is the same each time. #2, When I need help with anything in Payroll, the steps detailed in the Help (not the online help) are not valid. Yes, that's right. The menu options they suggest are not available to me since I am not a subscriber. So I have to waste time trying to click around and find what I need. #3, The withholding info isn't available to me unless I also have Microsoft Office and Excel. It does not work with Open Office. So I had to again find a work around when it came time to file my two W-2s. These are just the complaints foremost in my mind. There are other examples where Intuit is practically forcing you to pay them more money via subscription services just so their program works the way it should.

br /===== The Ugly =====
br /
br /It is very time consuming to customize invoices, receipts, and other memos. Once you have a finished template for an invoice, you cannot port that design over to a receipt even if you want them to look exactly the same; there is a very low usability when it comes to reminders. Let's say you want to send an outstanding invoice again 2 weeks and/or 1 week before it is due. You can write yourself a note or create a memo, and if you have the Company Snapshot open, you might see that reminder's title. You then have to click on the reminder to see what it says. Then you have to go to the client, click on the invoice, then select e-mail invoice. Close all those open windows. Then select Send Forms, edit the email text to say it's just a reminder and the invoice is a copy only, then hit send. It would be far more intuitive to have a function built into the program to auto select certain invoices for reminders and select when to send the reminder. More: Memorized bills have to be paid through the Pay Bills window, rather than the simpler register, or you will screw up your bill payments. Memorized bills will never enter themselves in the register even if you have a bill in real life that automatically debits your account every month. So even though the biller really automatically debits your account, QB makes you "pay" the bill manually for your records every time. Again, not intuitive.

br /
br /===== The Good =====
br /
br /Things we do like about QuickBooks: Once your invoice template is made, sending invoices is very simple. Keeping track of outstanding invoices, bills, and other expenses is also simple. The program itself is pretty straightforward once you get used to it. Creating reports is also a matter of clicking around and in a minute or so you have your report. Doing the taxes also becomes a simple matter of porting the data into your tax software. That's where QB shines and proves its worth. Of course, each tax category has to be double checked manually. This year our rent was entered in the taxes as 10 times less than what it should have been. I still don't know what caused the glitch. Luckily I checked it and was able to manually override the mistake.

br /===== Why Not the Downloadable Version? =====
br /
br /This year we decided to try the downloadable version, but it wasn't a simple download. You had to download a "downloader" and then use that to download your software. You're then asked what PC you want to use the software on. Long story short: Get the real thing (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002KINCSW?tag=a52-20ie=UTF8) and just be patient especially if you hate installing crap on your PC just to handle a simple task, especially downloading software, and if you want to avoid the burdens imposed by Digital Rights Management (DRM).
br /
br /I downloaded the software on a different computer than I intended to use the software on. While in the end, I got the download, it didn't go to my ideal location, and I had to hunt around a bit to find it in EXE format.
br /
br /Just say no to bloatware! Are the few bucks you save worth the extra nonsense?
Quick Download, Install and Data Conversion July 21, 2010 Rosanne I can certainly empathize with those reviewers who struggled with the QB 2010 download and installation. I'm pleased to report that I was able to download the softward, install it, go through the pesky online registration screens and get 3 sets of data converted in about an hour. Yes, the 'constant sell' screens are annoying - but where in your life are you not being advertised to?
RIPOFF ALERT July 2, 2010 Scott I purchased Quickbooks Pro 2010, installed the software and then called Intuit with the provided product number and license number. I was told by Intuit that the software license number was invalid and that the product could not be activated or used. According to Intuit, this is a second hand copy, meaning the software license had previously been purchased and installed on another computer and was therefore invalid. Basically this was a waste of time and money as I will now have to uninstall the software and then repurchase it and install it again.
No Issues with QuckBooks Pro 2010 July 1, 2010 Sitewizard 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I almost did not buy Quickbooks Pro 2010 due to all of the reviews here on Amazon. But I then spent some time reading reveiws other places and decided to make the purchase. I am running Windows 7 64 bit, the download was fast, Installation was smooth the License number provided worked. I did have to call in to register the product, but this took less then 3 minutes from the time I picked up the phone.
br /
br /As for all of the complaints about the program continuing to try and sell you more quickbooks products, there is a box on the the popup that you can check to turn off popups for that specific product. It seems there are about 4 different products they are trying to sell you so, after checking dont show on all 4 they have stopped. There have been alot of claims about this being a resource hog and locking up computers. Honestly I just started using the product, but I have been monitoring my system and I can say for sure that this is not using much in the way of cpu or memory, it does not seem to be doing any unexpected harddrive or network functions. Also, the little amount that I have used the product I have not had any issues with my system.
br /
br /In my case I would say the product is good for use.
So far so good- download went A++ June 30, 2010 Anne Sweeney (DC Metro) So I read all the reviews-well almost! I HAD to upgrade bc my online banking would not work in QB 2007- then I found out the product was not being supported anymore. This is very frustrating bc the only reason I upgraded was the I NEED online banking...who wants to hand enter tons of transactions?
br /
br / Ok that being said- my download from Amazon went smoothly- I am running window 7 64 bit on an HP laptop. I have dual processor and 4 gigs or ram i think. The install of the 2010 went just fine. I did have to convert my 2007 file- I have 2 companies and have only done one- the smaller one. That went fine. Setting up online banking was ok except I cannotdothe drect connect..I can only do webconnect. That is fine for me bc I like to have some control over what I am downloading. I downloaded my bank transactions and even used the newer matching window- I am still trying to get how to code a deposit as a sale butthat is no biggie...i willfigure it out. I just went into my P and L report and updated the categoty there. I can change back to the line item register matching if I want as well.
br /I also did not register the product yet- it gave me some time and I am making my husband sit on the phone to get the validation. I have 30 days in which to get that done.
br /I gave this a 4 bc of the seamless download and what I have seen thus far. Many of the bad ratings were mostly bc many people are mad that they HAD to upgrade, and that intuit upsells so many things. I am frustrated by this BUT I like the product overall so far and putting the forced upgrade issue aside I think I am much more satified than what I was expectng based on so many of the ratins here.
br /After I convert my other company - if I have issues I will post here! I hope I don't- but the file is much bigger and more complex!
