I actually started with Mavis Beacon back when it was the original! When the kids were ready for some help I think it was around version 8 or so? I was shocked to find it's up to 20!
I just enrolled my mom in a class called "Computers for the Clueless:Basic" (meaning there is an advanced "clueless class, lol). The instructor has been kind enough to allow me to attend the class (I sit in the back and shop on Amazon, read the Kindle forums, etc.!) so that I can keep up with what she is learning and then help her at home. The first day in I realized she was going to need a typing tutor at home as the (very poor) typing tutor in class is of course only on their server. I turned to the name I knew. What a great surprise to find the version just below the latest at a fantastic price of $6.25! It's through another seller via Amazon, and because we are Prime Members, free shipping.
Couldn't beat the price, so I ordered. Mom started her first lesson and was so proud! 98% accuracy and 9 WPM! I didn't tell her for another week that the goal was to get her to at least 30-40 WPM. After only using the program 4 times, when they next used the typing tutor in class, the instructor was so impressed at her progress (when everyone was on lesson 3, she had jumped to lesson 14), he asked if I would order one for him... and he used to be a typing instructor!) Several other students have asked me to order too.
Darn, maybe I should have just bought a bunch and marked 'em up. (I joke!)
While helping Mom one evening, I was bored, so decided to install the program on my laptop. OMG. I was shocked at how slow my typing was compared to what I thought it was!! Not only that, but it used to be that 60WPM was pretty fast. Maybe 80 at the top speed. Now, 60WPM is average and 120 is "fast"... WHAT? Guess I'd better brush up!
I don't care for the "games" myself, but you can easily skip those. My mom loves them! In the many copies I have bought for my mother and for several other folks, not one person has mentioned any glitch or bug.

Mavis is truly the way to go if you are trying to learn or increase your typing skills. It is easy and it is fun.

The other reviewers are right--this program has glitches and does not work properly. The lessons do not progress the way they are supposed to, so it's useless for learning and practice. I know it's cheap, but save yourself the hassle of having to return this like I just did. I am going to try the other Mavis Beacon program by MacKiev, which supposedly works fine, or try Typing Instructor.
DO NOT BUY THIS!

This software was wonderful to bring on a trip to Africa to work at a school. We purchased one for each computer at the school. The students who have had no typing instruction are able to navigate easily and learn quickly. Hopefully, their 3 wpm will increase tremendously with this software. Thanks!
