I had external drive I wanted to use as a back up and Norton makes that automatic for me! Just want I needed.

I thought I could "ghost" my drive to my new larger drive and just boot up. NOT. Maybe its just me but I have never been able to get ghost to work like that.
I was able to backup up my drive, create a restore disk then boot up the new drive with the "recover" CD. I used Ghost for this but Nero probably would have worked as well. All the programs were registered and my PC was happy. I will use ghost to backup files but I am glad I didn't spend more money to get the current version. I couldn't get Ghost to my partitions, files and OS to a drive that boots up and works just like the old one like I thought it would. The "clone" scheme I used seems foolproof and my 500 GB does everything my old 200 did.

I've been using Ghost for backups for a few years now and this version works great. It has saved me from hard disk crashes and possible virus infections (restore to backup just prior to infection). The backups are encrypted, incremental and can be easily copied to portable media for off-site backups (portable USB hard disk). The file-level backup works but isn't as user friendly as the full disk backup. You can even mount the full backups as drive letters for read-only access, and you can import the backup images into VMWare should you decide to turn your backups into a virtual machine. Overall the product is not perfect, but it does work and I would recommend this for someone else to use.
 BEWARE! Ghost does not clone hard drives. Save your money! February 28, 2010

I used a prior version of ghost to clone a hard drive in the past and it worked. I bought the 14.0 version and the support site provides a guide (Document # 2008011103205462) for performing the disk to disk transfer. I wanted to clone my old 200gb IDE drive to a western digital 1 tb SATA drive. Ghost did not function as advertised. Ghost could not find the destination drive. Long story short, I downloaded Western Digital's version of "TRUE IMAGE" from WD website and it did a PERFECT job! Save your money by buying a WD drive and download the cloning software for free.

If you want to clone your hard drive get the OEM utility to do so. It is normally offered from from you HD manufacturer. If you want a program to back up data this might be ok, but windows has this utility already built in. I have had more problems with Ghost programs than I can list. I now use seagate disk utility and it works great, and its free. You have to have a seagate disk to use it, but all HD makers have similar utilities.
