A COLLECTION OF GEMS - SOME RAW, SOME POLLISHED July 27, 2009 NeuroSplicer (Freeside, in geosynchronous orbit) I have a confession to make: when the first ICEWIND DALE came out I bought maybe the first copy and rushed home to immerse into it. I had just polished off the excellent BALDUR's GATE and the incomparable PLANESCAPE: TORMENT. A day into ICEWIND DALE and I absolutely hated it!
The graphics were comparable (all three games share the same engine) and the gameplay was almost identical. The music was excellent and certain tunes stayed with me ever since. The storyline was nothing to complain about - after all, any story set in "the spine of the world" can hardly go wrong! What I did not appreciate was the rushed feeling of a job on an impossible deadline.
In order to prolong the duration of the game, much smaller maps were stuffed with a far greater number of powerful foes - and almost nothing could be solved without combat. As a result, what was expected to be an enjoyable experience turned into a chore of endless autopausing, retargeting and constant battling.
Having said the above, I must admit that, in hindsight, my complains seem trivial. Little did I know at the time how far into hell greed would drive the gaming industry. Compared to 3-4 hour games, extra charges for essential content, Limited Installations and RootKits (of the likes of StarFORCE and SecuROM), well, games such as the ICEWIND DALE saga stand out as landmarks in PC-gaming history.
The expansion (THE HEART OF WINTER) improved things somewhat but the series did not find its stride until the very good ICEWIND DALE II. I remember spending endless hours with the sequel and can compare it to the original BALDUR's GATE.
RECOMMENDED.
Icewind Dale through the ages!! October 10, 2007 N. Slaven 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Thanks for the great computer game for my son!! He wanted to get this game again, as his was lost. I tried to get it for him by special order at another place but it never came forth. We also looked in various stores over the weeks but could not find it. Finally, I remembered that I often can get things off Amazon! So I looked, and there was your great Icewind Dale collection! Thanks so much for a good product with a great price for a new item!! It was packed well and arrived in a timely manner. Best wishes!!
Pretty good, considering how old it is... August 3, 2003 Markus Egger (Spring, TX United States) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I just recently bought this collection, although I already had the regular game. The reason I did this is that the Heart of Winter Extension is not available by itself anymore. The price still makes it a good deal. This game is of course quite old already, and one can def. tell, although for its time, this was an amazing game. I still enjoyed playing it even today. One of my criticisms of the original game is also true for this collection: There are no printed manuals. Even the advertised strategy guide is only included as a PDF file. I guess for 10 bucks, that's OK, but still... Note that the extension (Heart of Winter) game is a bit on the tough side, especially if you intend to use your original party from the main game. The Extension is def. much harder than the original game was.
In case you're wondering what this collection includes... March 20, 2003 David Noelle (New Paltz, NY United States) 34 out of 36 found this review helpful
I don't own this (yet) but I found a description of it from the publisher, Interplay, that gives some useful information about this product. It includes:* Icewind Dale (ASIN: B00004KHB3) * Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter (ASIN: B000058A57) * a "Mini Strategy Guide" for each * bonus CD containing a "Full Strategy Guide" for each * Icewind Dale Soundtrack * Icewind Dale 2 trailer
Just another RPG February 24, 2003 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I like the game, but to me there is nothing that really stands out about it. It does follow D&D rules pretty good, even with the attacks and rolls to save and etc. The graphics are average. One thing that gets me is the fact that I feel like I go back and forth back and forth. My girlfriend walked in the other day and said, "I see you play this game a lot and it always looks like you are doing the same exact thing." That would be going back to town all the time. BUT, that is just my experience and I'm only partially through the game. Good story line and stories behind the weapons and seperate quests. But for the most part I find the game to be boring.
